Color Purple

Today I read more of The Color Purple. Shug has been gone for a while, but she sends them a letter saying she is going to come and visit soon. On Christmas day, she arrived in a fancy new car. She has become even richer since she left and had been singing around the country. She gets out of the car with a man named Grady. She said it was her husband. This news kind of shocks Celie and her husband, Albert. Shug stays with them for a pretty long time. Grady and Albert sit around the house and drink all the time, while Shug and Celie talk. They sit around and talk and talk for hours. Celie tells Shug about all the times her father raped her and about how nobody ever truly loved her. She said the only person who did was her sister, Nettie. Shug wants to know all about Nettie. She tells her a bunch of stuff and tells her she never hears from her. Shug tells Celie that Albert has been hiding letters from her. He had secretly been keeping hundreds of letters Nettie had written Celie over the years. Celie knows he must have stashed them in his trunk, so Shug finds the key and they open all he letters. Celie begind to read all the letters from Nettie. They tell about how she had been on a missionary with her church. She has been in Africa and New York. Then, In one letter, Nettie says she is working for a man and a woman. They had adopted two children named Adam and Olivia. She says it must be fate, because she found out they were Celie’s children whom she didn’t know where was at. Nettie gets to play with them all day long. Celie can’t believe the letters she is reading. She is happy to hear from Nettie, but very angry with Albert. She is so angry that she cannot even talk for several days.
