Reading Day 3/17 -Color Purple

Today I read more of the Color Purple. Celie’s stepfather dies in his sleep. It turns out that Celie and Nettie inherit the house, a bunch of land, and a little store. Celie starts fixing it up  and is going to sell pants in the store. Her and her sister Nettie keep writing each other back and forth telling about what is going on in their lives. One day, Shug takes Celie out to eat and tells her she is in love with a nineteen year old man. Celie is hurt and cries. She cannot even speak and her heart is broken. She cannot believe Shug would do that to her after everything they have been through together.

Reading Day 3/10-Night

Today I read the last chapters of Night. Elie and his father are in another camp. His father is very sick. His lips are pale, he can barely talk, and he cannot get up. The sick must stay in a certain block and the others stay in different ones. This means Elie and his father are split up for the first time. Elie goes and visits his father everyday though. They are starving and not being fed very much at all. Sometimes Elie saves some of his soup and gives it to his father, because they do not feed the sick at all. He brings him coffee in the morning too. Still, his father is so weak and can barely go on. Elie knows he cannot fight death much longer. One night, he tells his father goodnight and climbs up to sleep in the bunk above him. He hears the officers come in and hit his father across the head. He doesn’t dare move, he knows there is nothing he can do. He goes to sleep that night. He wakes up, and his father is not there below him. Instead, some other man. He knows that he has died. From the on, Elie does not think of his father. He only thinks of food, of eating. Just trying to survive. Elie is in the camp a while longer, when the day comes. A U.S. military group comes and saves them. They see it pull up to the gate, and they all run for freedom.

Night

Today I read some of Night, by Elie Wiesel. Elie is seperated from his father and is put in a different block. He has to work many hard days. Then, soon after, it is selection time. Nobody wants to be selected to go to the crematorium, so they all act as strong and healthy as possible while the doctor examines them. Elie is not selected and he runs to find out if his father is selected or not. He finally finds him and his father was not selected either. They are both happy they get to live a while longer. Soon after, Elie’s foot becomes swollen and infected. He has to go to the doctor where they operate on him. They tell him to stay there for two weeks. While Elie is in the doctor, he hears news they must evacuate the next day because the Russian army is coming. Elie knows he cannot stay behind, so he escapes the doctor with his swollen foot and finds his father. The next morning they all have to take what they can and leave. They start running as fast as possible for a long time. If anyone stops or rests, they are shot. They must keep going, so Elie and his father try not to think about it, even if they are very weak. Finally they reach an abonded shed and they all rest. If they go to sleep, they know they will die, so they must keep each other awake. Elie does not know what their fate will be within the next few hours.

Reading Day Jan.14

Today I read more of The Color Purple. Celie and Nettie keep writing back and forth to each other. Nettie tells about her life with her new husband, Samuel. They travel to many different places, but Nettie says she can’t wait until she sees her sister’s face again. Celie and Shug are still living together. Celie sews pants most of the day and people want to buy them from her. She she decided to get other people to help her and they make pants to sell. She is making a living now and having a much better life. She finds out her Pa is not really her Pa. She dosn’t even know who her real parents are now. This makes her frustrated. The only thing she does know is that she has a daughter Olivia, who is with Samuel and Nettie. She wants to meet her very badly. She also can’t wait to see her sister because she loves her very much and she is the only person she can talk to.

Today I read more of the Color Purple. Celie goes back to her father’s house to ask him a few questions. She asks where her real father is buried. He tells her then leaves. A few days later, Shug announces she is going back home to Memphis. She says Celie is going with her. Albert says there is no way. Celie gets so mad and tells him off. He tries to hit her, but she stabs his hand with her knife. She says she is leaving whether he likes it or not because he is completely worthless. Her and Shug pack up and leave for Memphis. Celie wants to get away from everything and see her sister. She has been writing her sister back and forth and she is excited to see her soon. She gets to Shug’s house and it is very big and pink. She gets a nice room to stay in and she loves it.

Color Purple

Today I read more of The Color Purple. Shug has been gone for a while, but she sends them a letter saying she is going to come and visit soon. On Christmas day, she arrived in a fancy new car. She has become even richer since she left and had been singing around the country. She gets out of the car with a man named Grady. She said it was her husband. This news kind of shocks Celie and her husband, Albert. Shug stays with them for a pretty long time. Grady and Albert sit around the house and drink all the time, while Shug and Celie talk. They sit around and talk and talk for hours. Celie tells Shug about all the times her father raped her and about how nobody ever truly loved her. She said the only person who did was her sister, Nettie. Shug wants to know all about Nettie. She tells her a bunch of stuff and tells her she never hears from her. Shug tells Celie that Albert has been hiding letters from her. He had secretly been keeping hundreds of letters Nettie had written Celie over the years. Celie knows he must have stashed them in his trunk, so Shug finds the key and they open all he letters. Celie begind to read all the letters from Nettie. They tell about how she had been on a missionary with her church. She has been in Africa and New York. Then, In one letter, Nettie says she is working for a man and a woman. They had adopted two children named Adam and Olivia. She says it must be fate, because she found out they were Celie’s children whom she didn’t know where was at. Nettie gets to play with them all day long. Celie can’t believe the letters she is reading. She is happy to hear from Nettie, but very angry with Albert. She is so angry that she cannot even talk for several days.

I read more today in the Color Purple. Shug Avery is living in Celie’s house with her and her husband. Celie’s husband is in love with Shug Avery and wishes they would have got married instead. Celie dose not really have a problem with Shug Avery, she is kind of fascinated by her actually. Shug Avery is very dark and skinny and is either good or evil. Sometimes she is nice, but mostly she is very mean and always gets her way. She acts like she is better than them.
In the next chapter, Harpo and his wife Sofia come to visit. Sofia thinks there is something wrong with Harpo because he is always eating and eating. One night, Celie goes outside and Harpo is sitting there crying. She asks what is wrong and he say Sofia. He says she won’t do what I tell her to and I can’t make her mind. Celie realizes he is expecting a wife like herself. Harpo has seen his dad make Celie do whatever he wants. Celie tries to explain it’s not supposed to be like that and he should just love her.
Then, Celie goes and talks to Sofia. She said she loves Harpo with all her heart but she really needs a break or vacation. She is thinking about going to her Aunt’s house. So she finally makes a decision and takes her children and leaves. Harpo says he can’t make her stay, so he lets her go.

Today I read more of the book The Color Purple. It talked about Celie and her husband and his children. She said she was a good mother to them, but she dosn’t feel any love for them. One of the children, Harpo talks to Celie alot whenever they work together. Everyday they talk about his girlfriend Sofia. He can’t get her out of his head and he says he wants to marry her. Her daddy dosn’t want them to get married though. Also, she is pregnant with his child. So, eventually they get married at Sofia’s sister’s house. They move in together at a little house beside Celie’s house. They have two children together. Celie is jealous of Sofia because Sofia isn’t afraid to fight back. If someone tells her to do something and she dosn’t want to, she tells them. Celie wishes she could stand up for herself like this. One day, Harpo is talking to Celie and he says he dosn’t know how to make her mind. Celie says for him to beat her and she will listen. So in a few days, Celie hears them in their room fighting and breaking stuff and hitting each other. Sofia finds out about Celie telling Harpo to beat her and she confronts her about it. Celie apologizes and says she is a fool and that she was only jealous of her and wanted her to get treated the same way she got treated. Celie and Sofia start talking more.

Color Purple

Today I read more of the book, The Color Purple. As the story continues, it tell about Celie and her lifestyle with her husband. It tells that He is very mean to her and beats her and his children are mean to her too. He makes her work while he sits outside and smokes. In this chapter, you meet his two sisters Carrie and Kate. They take Celie shopping and buy her a new dress. They are nice to her and they tell her that she has to fight. She has to fight against her husband and his children because she is living a miserable life with them. Her sister Nettie is also telling her the same thing. Celie just lets them run over her and do whatever they want to her. She is to afraid to stand up for herself so she just sits back and lives a bad life. I think in the next few chapters, Celie will realize she cannot go on with her life being miserable and she will to decide to do something about it. I think she might leave her husband and get a new life. I think her and her sister will both go somewhere and have better lives than they do now.
